Looking forward to hearing the results...

Usually if you pack the tobacco right, and not use very large coals you should be fine...

Cold water helps smooth the smoke out too

The main reason for smoke being too hot is the amount of air going into the water, your hookah should have a "clutch" on it ( The part that screws out with the bearing ) once the smoke gets to hot for you, unscrew it and blow softly into your pipe so that it removes the "burnt" and hot smoke, then just pull gently on the pipe and test if the amount of air coming in the clutch is Softening the smoke from the top, Like Nima says make sure your coals arent too big and that they have a decent carbon rating in them, ill get more into the carbon content of coals at a later stage.

you could buy or even make a diffuser, it goes right on the end of the tube that goes in the water and works by making more bubbles so it is filtered better. This helps make the flavor come out so much better and also gives you a lot more smoke. If you want i could tell you how to make your own in 5 minuets and save like $12.

yes, it makes a world of difference and makes the experience overall better. I made one by cutting out a square of aliminum from a soda can (being very carefull not to get cut) put some holes in it and attached it with tape. Another very easy way is to get some drinking straws and stick em in the end to go in the water, if you are using three straws then the smoke will go out the straws and all the places in-between them giving you 7 exits and making for a nice smoke. Just make sure not to stick the straws up to far or the might SLIGHTY melt and give your smoke an unforgetably unpleasant taste.

If you are really cheap, you can make a diffuser with a dremel and one of the plastic widgets that come in a Guinness can (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Widget_(beer))

However, for $9 you can get a Heba diffuser (only available from hookah-shisha). It's worth every penny, and you get two diffusers in one package. The difference is phenomenal between non-diffused and diffused smoke.

that sounds good, ill have to try it. The easyest way by far is with the straws, iv tried the diffuser for 9 bucks (when i got it it happened to be 12) the straws deliver the same quality as the diffuser and is a LOT cheaper. Also if you find smaller straws you can put more in and then its even better.

Do you have a way to put some pictures on here of your homemade ones?
I'd love to see that.
