Smoking hookah is more than just smoking. Your surrounding environment, music being played, and friends conversing and smoking with you are just as important as smoking hookah itself. Hookah etiquette is an important part of smoking hookah. These rules are mostly rooted in ancient Middle Eastern culture where smoking hookah was a tradition and luxury. Following the rules are a sign of respecting the tradition as well as those who are smoking with you.

• When passing the hose, point the tip of it towards yourself
• When receiving the hose from someone else, slightly tap their hand as a sign of “thank you” and “respect”
• If you are smoking a multi hose hookah and you are not smoking from your hose, hold the tip with you finger so the rest can smoke easier
• Never blow smoke in someone else’s face
• Pass the hose to next person before they ask for it
• If you (and others) are not smoking, wrap the hose around the shaft

• Respect the hookah owner/host/server
• Don’t give advice on how to better make the hookah or pack the bowl
• If you damage the owner’s hookah or property fix it or pay for it

• Never smoke cigarettes around a hookah
• Never light a cigarette from the coal on the hookah
• Never ash a cigarette on on the hookah’s tray
