Brand and flavor:  Romman Double Apple

This is a classic flavor that the majority of hookah tobacco companies have replicated.  It is one of the most smoked flavors in the world and considered to be one of the most classic flavors.  The Romman version of this flavor is… ok.  I hadvaried results with it.  When I first bought this flavor it tasted like straight licorice.  I hated it and left it sitting in my hookah closet in a sealed tupperware container for many months.  eventually i got the courage to try it again and the flavor had mellowed out into something nice a enjoyable.  Romman is a brand that varies quite a bit.  From batch to batch the flavors I have experienced from them can change quite a bit so I am unsure if the current double apple they are selling is exactly the same but the batch I got needed to be aired out for a while to make it worth smoking.  If you like double apple you can find better blends that do not require waiting for the flavor to mellow out.

I would give this flavor a 5.  Once the flavor mellowed out and became smokeable it was good.  When I first bought it the licorice flavor was all that I could taste.  Firstly, the licorice flavor should be more of a natural anise flavor.  Secondly the flavor should not require so much extra time to be enjoyable.

Pharaohs Triple Apple

Brand and Flavor: Pharaohs Triple Apple

Shisha Tobacco Cut: A very fine chop. Not as shredded as HH but some of it is almost paste like.

Hookah Type: KM double trimetal. Nammor hose

Duration: 45 minutes or so.

Bowl: Small tangiers funnel

Foil / Screen: Regular foil

Coal / Amount: 2 CH QL coals

Smoke:  Thick smoke with large clouds and a good mouth feel.

Buzz:  Light and pleasant.

Smell / Flavor: Smells like a double apple.  It smells sweet and like a light apple with a nice anise.  The flavor is similar but a black licorice flavor takes a seat in the front.  It’s not terrible.  I greatly dislike black licorice.  I do enjoy the flavor of star anise when used to compliment other flavors.

Rating (1 to 10): 7   It’s good but there is room for improvement.  The apple flavor is very subdued and the presence of a black licorice flavor does not make me like it anymore.  I would prefer if that flavor was more of natural anise flavor and I wish the apple was a little more pronounced.  Frankly I wish it was Nakhla double apple.  Still the best double apple I have found.  As a change of pace though without the beastly buzz that nakhla can carry with it this is a wonderful option.  Not everyone likes to be knocked around by their hookah.  If you are interested in trying out a good “double apple” but are wary of the particular flavor this may be a good transition.  It’s smooth and flavorful without being too strong.

Hydro Les Deux Double Apple

Brand and Flavor: Les Deux (double apple)

Shisha Tobacco Cut: Looks like hairs and very fine splinters of fiber in a somewhat dry molasses mixture. Red.

Hookah Type: KM double trimetal. Razan hose.

Duration: About 45 minutes to 1 hour

Bowl: Vortex bowl

Foil / Screen: Regular foil

Coal / Amount: 2 CH QL coals

Smoke: Large clouds but light smoke texture. I can barely tell I’m smoking. A negative for me.

Buzz: Nothing.

Smell / Flavor: Smells like a typical double apple. The flavor is like a light double apple with notes of plant matter.

Rating (1 to 10): 5 You can pick up the Hydro line of “herbal” hookah blends can be found by following the link provided if you are interested. It’s a good brand. This particualr flavor is too light for my tastes. I want a double apple to be robust and hearty. I think that may be impossible with a non-tobacco product. For those looking for a tobacco alternative Hydro Shisha is a good choice. I am not a big fan of tobacco free smoke blends but I am not entirely in objection to them. I do suggest researching each blend and figuring out what they use as a base for the mix. There is very little research done regarding the effects of smoking pressed sugarcane bagasse.
