NOT FOR LIGHT WEIGHTS!

Now that I got that out of the way, I recently got my hands on a kilo of Al Fakher Soft Black and I am very happy.  This is a black style moassel from Al Fakher and it is far from the modern tobaccos that many people are used to.  Black style moassels are an older form of hookah smoking that consists almost entirely of molasses and tobacco leaves.  The leaves are unwashed and the molasses is strong.  The flavor that you can expect from a tobacco like this is of medium molasses and aged tobacco.  It’s slightly sour, a little sweet and ten kinds of smokey.  There are subtle notes of dark forest fruit like plums that are over ripe and maybe even a bit fermented.  I mean that in a good way.  The flavor is like a slightly mellowed version of Salloum unflavored but Al Fakher Soft Black is a lot easier to deal with.

Most black style tobaccos that make it to this shore (there are not many) will be so dried out and solid that I would feel safe using them as house building material.  This means that you need to re-hydrate the tobacco with molasses and glycerin.  It requires a bit of cooking and careful balance of ingredients to get it back to it’s original form.  Al Fakher Soft Black comes packaged how Al Fakher packages al their tobacco now.  It’s in a plastic tub and inside that is a sealed plastic bag that keeps it all very fresh and can be sealed back up to maintain that freshness.

As stated at the beginning of this review, Al Fakher Soft Black is not for the new smokers.  This is a strong tobacco that gave me a good medium buzz.  It should be no surprise that I smoke a lot of hookah but I am also a cigar smoker and have a fairly high nicotine tolerance.  This is a blend to be sipped and enjoyed slowly unless you are a seasoned smoker.  If you are willing to run the risk this blend can produce some impressive clouds but it must be tended to carefully as it can overheat.  The classic style means that it is not as heat resistant as what many are used to.

I have been smoking this out of a Khalil Mamoon Double trimetal and the tobacco was packed into a small funnel bowl.  Four coconut coals got this going nicely and producing some big puffy clouds.  I would suggest either using a washable hose or devoting a leather hose to just this flavor or black moassel in general.  This will ghost.

8.5 out of 10.   I love this tobacco but I understand that it is not for eveyone.  It’s strong and fairly complex in flavor but a bit heat sensetive and may be a little hard for less experienced smokers to smoke properly.

This new review is for Al Fakher Golden Grape.  This is from the fairly small line of Golden flavors from Al Fakher which include a strawberry, eskandarani apple, rose and grape.  This grape flavor is nice and sweet.  It’s a red style grape flavor rather than the green that the normal line is supposed to be.  That means that the flavor is a bit sweeter, somewhat more complex and a little more robust.  I am not entirely sure that this was captured with this blend but it’s still nice.  I was enjoying the blend most recently out of my Khalil Mamoon double trimetal and a standard Egyptian bowl.  Sadly at the end of this session I saw water leaking out of my base and found that it had a hair line fracture running along the bottom.  So once again the Km is going to be out of the game for a bit…  just got that base too.

Well, back to the task at hand.  All in all I would say that this is a good flavor that sits somehwere between a realistic grape concentrate and a grape candy.  It’s slightly artificial but mostly tastes like a sour grape jelly.  I am a fan.  This flavor can get cloying after a while and it can get a little harsh if not tended properly.  I aired this one out for a while after smoking it the first time and that reduced the harshness problem but it can still occur if treated improperly.

8 out of 10 for me on this one.  A little fickle but a nice and strong flavor with good clouds and good mixing potential.

Brand and Flavor: Al Fakher rose

Shisha Tobacco Cut:  Shredded and very drippy. It’s soaked.

Hookah Type: KM double trimetal.  Nammor hose

Duration: 40 minutes

Bowl: Vortex bowl

Foil / Screen: Regular foil

Coal / Amount:  3 CH QL coals/ 2 CH QL coals depending on heat needed.

Smoke:  Awesome smoke.  Very thick and dense. A strong mouth feel.

Buzz:  Light buzz.  It can creep up on you if you are not careful.

Smell / Flavor:  It smells like rose and tastes like rose.  Simple as that.

Rating (1 to 10):  7 I am giving this on a 7 based on the wide spread appeal of the flavor.  I love rose flavors but frankly this is not the best I have ever had and a lot of people can’t stand rose alone.  It treat me nicely but at times can be a bit too much to smoke for long periods of time.  The flavor is accurate without being too chemical or soapy.  It tastes like rose water.  Real rose ptals have a slightly acidic quality to them that I really enjoy.  If you are looking for a good rose flavor this is a very good option.  If you are looking for a great rose flavor then take a step up and try the Golden Rose by Al Fakher.  It’s one of the best in my opinion but it’s a little more expensive.  For those hunting for a bargain then basic Al fakher rose is a great buy.

Smoke:  Awesome smoke.  Very thick and dense. A strong mouth feel and often unpleasant sensation in the lungs.

Buzz:  Light buzz.  It can creep up on you if you are not careful.

Smell / Flavor:  It smells like chocolate and tastes like chocolate with a slightly smokey and bitter after taste.

Rating (1 to 10):  5 I enjoy a good western pipe now and again.  I am also a cigar smoker.  When I first heard about this blend I was excited.  Sadly the flavor that is implied by the name is nothing close to what you can expect.  I am docking this one for inaccurate flavor and for it’s issues with the now infamous throat tickle associated with the new Al Fakher.  Not entirely unpleasant regarding flavor but it works better as a mixer to avoid the heat management issues that it has and to add a little chcolate flavor to a blend.  Alone it’s a bit too cloying at times.  This blend was improved by a little acclimation but not to the point of raising the score.
